Space

Positive and negative space and what it does is it helps things stand out from the background for example.

It is a combination of lights and dark and the design is made up of patterns that have dark and light values that make each pattern pop out.

I used positive and negative space by creating designs that when on the opposite side of itself creates a full shape or figure.

For the paper one I just cut designs into all 4 sides of the sqaure and glued them back onto the paper to create full figures and for the digital one I made cutouts the same way, but i just flipped them either horizontally or vertically.

I want my audience to notice the different designs and what figures are formed when the parts of the design are flipped.
